Preventative Services

Prophylactic care is all procedures helping to prevent any gums and teeth disease to develop. Accumulated deposits on the teeth cause inflammation, hypersensitivity, and bleeding gums, as well as root exposure, which can lead to bone loss and ultimately loss of the teeth.

Dental Hygiene Therapy

At our clinic, dental hygiene visit starts with a comprehensive assessment. If collected data shows the active stage of gum disease, then dental hygiene therapy is required. Periodontal (gum) disease is a bacterial infection that destroys the support and structure of your teeth. Therapy may include deep cleaning, periodontal maintenance, full mouth periodontal debridement, laser-assisted procedures, adjunctive therapy (local delivery of antibacterial agents), and personalized oral hygiene instructions.

PREVENTATIVE SERVICES

Comprehensive Dental Hygiene Assessment

An assessment is a detailed evaluation of the teeth and gums for signs of disease. It includes measurement of the gums, exposure of root surface, bleeding, and teeth mobility. After a comprehensive dental hygiene assessment and gums evaluation, a personalized dental hygiene care plan will be developed. There are different types of dental cleanings and some are more involved than others.

Appointment Type: 30-minute session for new patients and 20 minute session for continued care

Prophylactic care helps prevent any gums and teeth disease from developing. It consists of dental hygiene assessment, professional teeth cleaning to remove plaque and stains, and application of fluoride varnish to strengthen the teeth and prevent cavities. Accumulated deposits on the teeth cause inflammation, hypersensitivity, bleeding gums, and dental recessions, which can lead to bone loss and ultimately loss of the teeth.

Prophylaxis or Regular Dental Cleaning

This type of cleaning is only recommended for patients who have generally good oral health, regular dental hygiene visits twice a year, and do not suffer from bone loss or gum disease: bleeding, exposure of the root surface, and infection. Prophylaxis involves removing plaque, calculus, and stains from the teeth. These treatments should be performed regularly every 6 months. If you smoke, or drink a lot of coffee or tea, visit our office at least once every 3 months.
Appointment Type:
60 minutes session

*This visit includes the application of Fluoride Treatment.

Oral Cancer Screening

Early detection of lesions is important to reduce the risk of cancer. Oral cancer examinations are quick and painless. Tobacco of any kind – cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco – increases your risk for oral cancer. The Mouth Cancer Foundation reports that 90 percent of those with oral cancer consume tobacco. Heavy use of alcohol also increases a person's chance of developing oral cancer.

Pit and Fissure Sealants (Cavity Prevention Treatment)

Brushing and flossing help remove food particles and plaque from the smooth surfaces of teeth. However, the bristles cannot reach areas of the teeth where there are depressions and grooves. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by sealing the grooves. A thin layer of material is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where cavities occur more often. It protects the enamel from plaque and acids. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. The likelihood of developing pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. But adults can benefit from sealants as well.

Deep Cleaning or Scaling and Root Planing

During a regular cleaning, known as prophylaxis, we remove tartar and calculus buildup above and below the gum line, a process called scaling. However, the foundation of your teeth extends below the gum line, where periodontal disease can lurk. Our deep cleaning procedure involves meticulous removal of tartar and plaque at and below the gum line, along with root planing to clean the root surfaces and eliminate bacteria. By addressing these areas and promoting healing, we reduce pocket depth, allowing your teeth to regain their health.

Appointment Type: 1-2 appointments, 1-2 hours session

Periodontal Maintenance (Periodontal Cleaning)

Once you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease and have undergone scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance is the continuing care advised. Rather than just addressing the crowns of the teeth as in prophylaxis, periodontal maintenance also cares for your tooth roots, gums, and bone. The frequency of your periodontal maintenance appointments depends on your oral health condition & will be determined during your dental hygiene visit.

Appointment Type: 60 minutes session

Periodontal Debridement

This dental cleaning procedure is recommended for our patients whose last dental cleaning was 2 or more years ago. The American Dental Association defines debridement as the "Removal of subgingival and/or supragingival plaque and calculus which obstructs the ability to perform an evaluation." It means that it happens before your regular checkup when a typical cleaning isn't enough to evaluate the health of your teeth. When done properly, this type of dental cleaning allows your dentist to have a more complete view of your teeth without dense plaque and tartar clouding the view.
